They came out for the leak detection and located the leak spot on. They then completed the bypass of the leaking water line. The way they treated my home and my family was impressive to say the least. Learning you have a plumbing leak is distressing. So many concerns. So many questions. First off if you see the signs of a water line or sewer leak, don't ignore it. You need to call a licensed plumber who specializes in leak detection and is qualified to make the repairs. Sometimes all that is needed is a small repair. However, more often than not you will need to consider repiping either a single pipe or possibly the your entire Ladera Ranch home. 

There are two terms you will want to understand. Repiping and rerouting. You will want to know about PEX pipe and how it is different than dopper pipe. Most of the information below is about the use of PEX pipe which is flexible plastic pipe. Copper pipe is an option but with the additives the city puts in your water are the reason for most copper pipe leaks in the first place. As long as these additives are there the errosion will continue and copper pipe leaks are the outcome.

Is there a difference in repiping and a reroute? A reroute is generally speaking of abandoning the leaking pipe and a new pipe is routed around, generally through the walls and ceiling. Repiping could also include that single water line or it can also be used to describe running new pipe throughout the entire home.

What cost difference in repiping or reroute? You will get different answers, but ultimately you want to get a bid. At Leak Star we charge $1700 to reroute or do the repiping of a single water line. This price could vary some depending on the size of your home. That price should be disclosed once the leak detection is complete We also provide leak detection in Ladera Ranch. If we do your leak location which usually costs $200 and we do the repiping or reroute, your leak detection is included in the price of repairs. So your total costs when using our repiping service is still $1700 with the leak detection included in that.

If you decide on repiping the whole house in order to avoid future water leaks, the costs start at about $3000 for a small house. I think it goes without saying that the larger the house, the more the financial cost and time. If you have had more than 2 water leaks, repiping your entire home is probably a wise choice.

How long does repiping take? Typically a single line can be done within a day, if no unsuual conditions are found. Sometimes knowing exactly how the orignal water lines were are run be a bit o0f a puzzle. As many as 20-30 water lines can be running through your walls, in your garage and under the slab in a smaller home. Finding the exact leaking pipe can be challenging, especially if the leak is very small. That is why you want someone with experience. If we can get an early start, you can still have your water leak repaired and water running by the end of the day. In the rare case it takes a bit longer your price should not change for that single water line leak.

Repiping the entire house will take more time. You an expect a 2-3 days for a small 1 bath house or up to a week or more for a larger home. Usually when using PEX pipe, moving out is not something you have to do. Water only needs to be turned off when the initial water leak repair is made and when the final connections are made to the main water system.

We try be as clean as possible, using barriers to contain and prevent the spread of dust.

What about repiping for under concrete slab leak? The thought of a slab leak probably makes you cringeenvisioning a jackhapper tearing up your beautiful wood floor. Just let that thought slip right on out of your head, that is not our first choice, in fact it is very rare that we would ever need to go to that extreme. A simple single line reroute will usually do the trick and it is easier on all of us.

How much damage will repiping do? If you caught your water leak early or if it is small and the water damage is minimal the cost of drywall repair could be very small. Smaller holes are cut into the dry was and the new PEX pipe is fished through the walls.

On occasion there may be longer drywall cuts but sometimes smaller holes are all that is needed. Copper pipe is more difficult to deal with and more cuts to the walls are ususally needed.

Who will fix the damage after the repipe? As plumbers we are not qualified to make the repairs and are not in a position to repair the drywall or reinstall any cabinet that may need to be moved in the case of severe water damage. We are very careful to only cut what is needed for investigation and repiping, but being certain all materials contain water have been removed to prevent mold growth. Those types of repairs are the homeowners responsibility, but we will help wherever we can so you can find someone trustworthy who does a really nice job.
